Low-Frequency Vibrational Excitations in a Niobium-Phosphate Glass for Raman Gain Applications
نویسندگان
چکیده
Raman gain for all-optical amplification depends significantly on the cross section for spontaneous Raman scattering. We present measurements of the Raman spectrum of binary niobium-phosphate glasses in the frequency range from 5 – 1300 cm. The spectra of these glasses show a low-frequency enhancement of the vibrational density of states (‘Boson peak’) suggesting a significant gain profile for application in Raman amplifiers as well as providing an additional mechanism for Raman gain. To separate the effects of density of states from the lightvibration coupling we carried out an inelastic neutron scattering investigation of 40 Nb2O5 60 NaPO3 using the time-of-flight spectrometer (TOF-TOF) at the FRM II neutron source in Munich. The Boson peak appears between 40 and 70 cm as an increase of the reduced density of states over the flat Debye approximation. Possible mechanisms contributing to the low frequency excitations such as disorder-induced irregular vibrational states are discussed.

متن کاملRaman scattering by electron-hole excitations in silver nanocrystals
Raman scattering experiments from silver nanocrystals embedded in films of amorphous silica are reported. In addition to the low-frequency peak due to vibrational quadrupolar modes, a broadband is observed in the high-frequency range, with a maximum at about 1000 cm. The linear dependence of the position of this maximum on the inverse cluster radius is in agreement with the Raman scattering by ...
متن کاملRaman scattering and the low-frequency vibrational spectrum of glasses.
We present a theory of low-frequency Raman scattering in glasses, based on the concept that light couples to the elastic strains via spatially fluctuating elasto-optic (Pockels) constants. We show that the Raman intensity is not proportional to the vibrational density of states (as was widely believed), but to a convolution of Pockels constant correlation functions with the dynamic strain susce...
متن کاملObservation of Raman Gain in Reduced Length of Bismuth Erbium Doped Fiber
Raman amplification of a 49 cm Bismuth oxide (Bi2O3) as a nonlinear gainmedium based erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) is reported in new and compactdesign in near infrared spectral regions. The bismuth glass host provides theopportunity to be doped heavily with erbium ions to allow a compact optical gain fiberamplifier design by using reduced fiber length and the 1480...

© 2007 American Institute of Physics, S-0031-9228-0711-020-6 When light interacts with matter, it can scatter inelastically from vibrational quantum states. During that process, photons may lose energy to, or gain it from, vibrational excitations. A change in the photon energy must produce a concomitant shift in the frequency of the scattered light (see box 1). The phenomenon, called the Raman ...
